Girona FC, led by Bolivian Marcelo Claure, stumbled on their visit to the Metropolitano. The Catalan team lost 3-0 to Atlético de Madrid, on the second date of LaLiga 2024-2025.
Girona, last season’s revelation, turned up at the Cívitas Metropolitano with some new faces. He lacked the goal and made mistakes that complicated the game.
The Colchoneros reached four points, placing themselves in third place. While the Girona team stayed with one point, placing themselves in 18th place.
Coach Míchel Sánchez presented a starting eleven with Paulo Gazzaniga between the posts; Arnau Martinez, David Lopez, Daley Blind and Miguel Gutierrez in defense; Ivan Martin, Oriol Romeu and Yangel Herrera in midfield; and Viktor Tsygankov, Abel Ruiz and Bryan Gil up front.
While Diego Simeone proposed a starting eleven with Jan Oblak in goal; Marcos Llorente, Robin Le Normand, José María Giménez, César Azpilicueta and Rodrigo Riquelme in the defensive line; Pablo Barrios, Rodrigo De Paul and Samuel Lino in the middle; and Antoine Griezmann and Julián Álvarez in attack.
Atlético de Madrid controlled the game in the first halfbut struggled to break through Girona’s defensive block. Until, in the 37th minute, visiting goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga came out wrong and handled the ball outside the area. In the 39th minute, Griezmann put his foot in from the goalkeeper’s corner to open the scoring.
In the second half, at 48′, Llorente took the ball to the edge of the area and sent a bomb to extend the home side’s lead. Girona tried to react, but were caught off guard by a counterattack. Koke sent the ball into the back of the net and made it 3-0 for the Koke Resurrección.
