Marc Ostfield: “This will not be the last appointment in Paraguay”

On the night of the Paraguayan American Chamber at the Mariano Roque Alonso Expo site, the United States ambassador, Marc Ostfield, reiterated that the statement given about former president Horacio Cartes, in which he is designated as significantly corrupt, did not It will be the last in Paraguay.

“The designation reaffirms the commitment of the United States to combat corruption and impunity that undermine the faith of the Paraguayan people in their democratic institutions. As we have said, this will not be our last appointment in Paraguay”, he asserted forcefully in this last sentence.

The former president and his family are ineligible to enter the United States due to his acts of corruption during his tenure for obstructing a major international investigation into transnational crime to protect himself and his criminal associate from possible prosecution and political harm.

“These actions undermined the stability of Paraguay’s democratic institutions by contributing to the public perception of corruption and impunity within the office of the Paraguayan president,” highlights part of the statement issued yesterday by the embassy.

Additionally, these actions enabled and perpetuated Cartes’ recently documented involvement with foreign terrorist organizations and other designated US entities, undermining US security from transnational crime and terrorism and threatening regional stability.
