The former ambassador even criticized one of the most controversial episodes that the president had with members of organized crime: the release of Ovidio Guzmán, son of Mexican drug trafficker Joaquín Guzmán Loera.

“He let Ovidio Guzmán go because he didn’t want to have more widespread bloodshed in Culiacán. It was just a terrible moment. The truth is that the Mexican Army was outgunned,” he said.

The cession of the territory to the drug trafficker

There have also been criticisms from legislators in the United States. Marco Rubio accused President López Obrador of having links with drug trafficking.

Through his social networks, the legislator took advantage of the message to express his approval for the decision of the Mexican president not to attend the Summit of the Americas, to link López Obrador with crime.

“I am glad to see that the Mexican president, who has handed over sections of his country to drug cartels and is an apologist for tyranny in Cuba, a murderous dictator in Nicaragua and a drug trafficker in Venezuela, will not be in the US this week,” he wrote.

AMLO: “Violence is not widespread”

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has defended what his government has done in terms of security and He has assured that the violence is not generalized.

“It is not generalized, it is not what the US agencies say that 30 percent of the territory is dominated by organized crime in Mexico, it is not true, we can prove it. There are states where there are no homicides, half of the states do not have a problem of violence that is reflected in homicides; and of the other half, there are eight or 10 states where we have more problems in the case of homicides”, defended the president.

Even though more than 118,000 intentional homicides have been committed so far in his six-year term, the president has refused to change his security strategy, which is focused on addressing the causes that generate violence (through social programs).
