Manoel Carlos, responsible for classic Brazilian soap operas such as Pages of Life, For Loveamong others.
The production company Boa Palavra, which has Carlos’ copyright, released a statement yesterday, in which it confirmed the death:
“It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Manoel Carlos Gonçalves de Almeida, affectionately known as Maneco, which occurred today, at the age of 92.”
Manoel Carlos, born on March 14, 1933 in São Paulo, began his career in 1950, in theater, as an actor. But in 1952 he launched his first soap opera, Helenaon TV Paulista, a broadcaster that would later become TV Globo. He also worked on TV Tupi, Record, Manchete, Band, with soap operas, miniseries, program direction, etc.
But it was really with his serials on Globo that Maneco gained national recognition. His first soap opera on the channel was Mary, Maryin 1978, at 6pm. In 1980, he joined the 8pm slot, considered noble, and was co-author of Living Water alongside Gilberto Braga. It was a huge success for the channel. Other historic successes came in 1981 and 1982, with Dance with me and Summer Sunrespectively.
Maneco’s good relationship with Globo generated more successful soap operas such as Happiness (1991 to 1992), For Love (1997 to 1998), Family Ties (2000 to 2001), Women in Love (2003), Pages of Life (2006 to 2007), Live Life (2009-2010) and continued until 2014, with the last serial, In Family.
Manoel Caros was also very successful in series and had some important hits such as the highly praised Malu Womanbetween 1979 and 1980. In 2001, he wrote Anita’s presence and in 2009 it was the turn of Maysa: When the Heart Speaks.
With its protagonists called Helena, family stories and strong women, Maneco, despite being from São Paulo, used Rio de Janeiro as a setting very well and, with all this, leaves an eternal mark on Brazilian TV.
