The Mayor’s Office of Managua, through a statement released on its social media, reported new detours caused by the expansion project of the Juan Pablo II Highway, a road recently renamed by the Ortega government as the “Héroes de la Insurrección Highway.”
“Starting on Monday, July 22, 2024, pipes will be installed, so there will be no vehicular access on the main road of the Larreynaga Bridge and the main road of the El Edén Bridge will be enabled,” the capital city council reported.
The main road of the El Edén Bridge is reopened after being closed for five months due to the progress of the expansion project on section four of the Juan Pablo II Highway.
Detours on the North Road
Traffic disruptions also extend to the Pan-American Highway North. The Managua City Hall said that in that area they will also begin “the replacement of pipelines and the construction of the La Robelo overpass.”
He specified that cargo vehicle traffic and public transport routes will circulate in the central lanes in both directions of the Northern Highway, but light vehicles, including taxis, motorcycles, minibuses, vans and cars, “will be diverted.”

According to the letter from the municipality, light vehicles traveling from the west of Managua on the Pan-American Highway North “will detour at the traffic lights where the Pepsi station was, near the Ajax Delgado police complex, with circulation permitted towards the north and south of the city,” while those traveling from the east of that road “will detour at the Portezuelo overpass, with circulation permitted towards the north and south of the city.”
In both affected areas, the Mayor of Managua explained that “public transport routes will be adjusted according to the authorized roads.” In addition, it asked the capital’s residents to “avoid parking on streets designated as detours to ensure vehicle circulation and safe transit.”

The Juan Pablo Highway expansion project officially began in August 2023 in sections one and four. Section one covers 2.6 kilometers from the 7 Sur sector to the Julio Martínez traffic lights; and section four runs 2.7 kilometers from the El Riguero traffic lights to La Robelo, on Carretera Norte.
The project, according to information shared last year by the Mayor’s Office of Managua, has an estimated cost of more than 200 million dollars and covers four sections, which together add up to 9.6 kilometers of road, which will have between ten and eight lanes, five overpasses and two bridges.
