Man who set Alexandra Liriano on fire is sentenced

He Court Collegiate of the Judicial District of Hermanas Mirabal sentenced a man accused of the death of a woman to 30 years in prison, at whom he threw a flammable liquid and set fire, causing deathin an event that occurred in the municipality Salcedoon February 16, 2024.

At the trial, judges Manuel Antonio Carela, Biannelys Martínez Calvo and Elizabeth Cepeda Muñoz, declared the accused guilty. Pedro Julio Martínez Caraballo (Chacho)for the death of Alexandra Trinidad Liriano Toribio.

According to the accusation of Ministry Publicthe event occurred when Mrs. Liriano Toribio, 51 years old, received a call from the now convicted person, where he told her to go look for money in the little park located on Hermanas Mirabal Street, corner of Sánchez, in the city of Salcedo.

The accusatory file indicates that, once the woman arrived at the place, Martínez Caraballo invited her to have some wines, and, minutes later, when the woman began to feel bad, he told her that he would leave the place, a moment that he took advantage of to take a small white cube that he had hidden in the place and throw the fuel on her, she ran away, while he chased her, lit a match and threw it at her. Everything was recorded on a security camera.

After committing the act, the aggressor undertook the flight from the place, while the woman ran out on fire, asking for help, being helped by passers-by who were traveling along the aforementioned road.

According to journalistic reports of the event, the aggressor and Liriano Toribio were a couple.

Liriano Toribio died on February 24, 2024 while receiving attentions medical in the Burns Unit of the Ney Arias Lora Hospital, in Santo Domingo, as a result of the burns by second and third degree flame on 77% of the body surface.

Sentenced for gender violence and acts of torture and barbarity

In the course of the trial, the plenary session Court Collegiate of the Judicial District of Hermanas Mirabal accepted the evidentiary elements presented by Yesiely Fabré Fernández and Gabriel Pierre Rojas, litigants from the Comprehensive Care Unit for Victims of Gender ViolenceDomestic and Sexual Crimes of this province, which served as the basis for ruling on the maximum sentence against Martínez Caraballo.

The court sentenced Martínez Caraballo for violating articles 295, 296, 297, 302, 303 and 303, numeral 4, ordinal 10, of the Code Penal Dominican, modified by Law 24-97 on Gender and Domestic Violencewhich classify and sanction the criminal type of murder with acts of torture and barbarity with premeditation against the deceased Alexandra Trinity Liriano Toribio.

The defendant must serve the sentence in Center of Deprivation of Libertad (CPL) Juana Núñez, from the city of SalcedoMirabal Sisters province.

The fiscal holder of Hermanas Mirabal, Zoila Rodríguez Ynfante, stated that this “exemplary sentence reaffirms the robust work carried out by the Ministry Public of this demarcation, to achieve justice in an act of barbarism that shocked the entire country.
