Santiago.– The National Police reported that a man voluntarily surrendered this Tuesday as part of the investigations into the murder of a public transport driver, which occurred during an armed attack directed against a prison official in Santiago Oeste.
The detainee was identified as Juan Carlos Bretón Veras, alias “El Deportado”, 33 years old, who appeared through a media outlet before the Strategic Communications Directorate of the National Police, where he was received by Colonel Diego Pesqueira, head of that department.

By offering the information, Colonel Pesqueira assured that the accused will be fully guaranteed his fundamental rights and that he will be investigated in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and current laws, in relation to the act attributed to him.
Case details
According to official reports, the event occurred on January 9, 2026, when still unidentified individuals fired several shots at the vehicle of the deputy director of Assistance and Treatment of the Rafey Hombres Correction and Rehabilitation Center (CCR), Laura Ricardo.
The attack occurred on Tamboril Avenue, Monte Rico sector, in the Santiago Oeste municipal district.
During the attack, Crecencio Nolasco Cruz Santana, 63, who worked as a public transport driver and was in the vicinity of the scene at the time of the attack, was killed by a gunshot wound.
Investigations continue
The National Police reiterated that investigations remain open, with the aim of identifying and arresting the others involved in this incident.
Meanwhile, the detainee will be placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry for the corresponding legal purposes.
