Sarmiento, affectionately known as ‘Pacho’, was enjoying a day of recreation with his family, who had traveled from Bogotá to visit him.
As reported Vanguard and the testimony of witnesses, the incident occurred when one of his relatives began to have difficulties in the water, which led ‘Pacho’ to jump to his aid.
A local fisherman explained to the media that the man managed to save the family member in danger, but could not get out of the water alive. “That site of La Represa is very careful because it has many holes, the terrain is unstable and at any moment you can leave,” he commented.
The distressing moment sparked an immediate search by fishermen and relief agencies, who joined the effort to rescue Francisco. The work lasted for hours due to the difficult conditions of the swamp, which has a depth of approximately 4 meters.
Finally, on the morning of Friday, January 17, the Barrancabermeja Firefighters confirmed the discovery of Sarmiento’s lifeless body. The man worked as a security guard for a contracting company in the region.
