The government of Nicolás Maduro requested this Thursday that a meeting of the United Nations Security Council be convened with “urgency” against the “armed attack” that could occurhe said, by the United States against Venezuela “in a very short term.”
“This letter, based on proven, reasonable and objective information, confirms that an armed attack by the United States of America against (…) Venezuela can occur in a very short term,” Venezuela warned in a letter, shared by Foreign Minister Yván Gil, addressed to the Russian Vassily A. Nebenzia, president of the UN Security Council.
Venezuela requested that a meeting be “urgently convened” to “determine the existence of a threat to peace and make recommendations to stop the ongoing US aggression plans,” given that the United States – it noted – has decided to “close all avenues of diplomatic contact” with Venezuela, as it said. The US military deployment
The Maduro government made this request after mentioning the “unprecedented military deployment” of the United States, which includes, it stressed, “destroyers, combat aircraft, elite troops, assets used in special operations and covert missions, and even a nuclear (powered) submarine, all of which are located a few miles from the Venezuelan coast.”
The United States defends that this deployment is to combat drug trafficking, but the Maduro government assured this Thursday, as it has said on numerous occasions, that this is a “false fight” and is “intimidating actions” to promote a “regime change.”
Venezuela highlighted what it considered to be the three “dangerous statements” of the president of the United States, Donald Trump: the first, on September 22, in his “intervention before the General Assembly, when he expressed his willingness to use US military power to ‘blow up’ President Nicolás Maduro.”
The second, he continued, on October 3, when he “notified the United States Congress of his determination that the country was in a ‘non-international armed conflict’ with drug cartels.”
And, the third, the statement concludes, on October 4, when Trump indicated that “he would now have to ‘start searching by land’ for the alleged drug traffickers”, which for Venezuela “points towards the imminence of a violation” of its national sovereignty.
“It goes without saying that this aggression that is approaching against our country would have great repercussions on the peace, stability and security of the entire Latin American and Caribbean region,” warned the chavista executive.
The Trump administration accuses Maduro of leading the Cartel of the Suns, designated by the United States as a terrorist organization allegedly linked to drug trafficking, which the Venezuelan government rejects and calls a lie.
