President Nicolás Maduro recalled that yesterday, Saturday, December 7, marked the bicentennial of Simón Bolívar’s convocation to the Amphictyonic Congress of Panama. He observed that “this letter has supreme validity with great force in the project that moves us, which is the project of the great homeland.”
The head of state, from his Instagram account, stated, in the company of the Minister of Culture, Ernesto Villegas, that the objective of the meeting called by Bolívar was “to create a confederation of Ibero-American peoples, from Mexico to Chile and Argentina.”
“I share with you the letter of the Liberator Simón Bolívar as head of State of Peru, when convening the Congress of Panama. It is a document with historical validity that includes the concept of the integration of the republics to combat imperial attacks.”
Maduro recalled that the text – which dates back 200 years – signed by Bolívar on December 7, 1824, reflects the integrative vision of the Liberator and his call for unity in the fight for the independence of Latin America and its fight against foreign influences. .
Bolivarian feeling
Maduro explained that Bolívar, at the time, visualized the isthmus of Panama as “the strategic center to forge union between nations that had just emerged from the colonial yoke.”
In that sense, the Amphictyonic Congress took place from June 22 to July 15, 1826, and was classified as a monumental effort by Bolívar to establish “a multinational army, promote a common foreign policy and bring together Latin American countries for concerted action.” .
However, Maduro noted that “the lack of an agreement that unified the independentist republics opened the door to a new paradigm in the 19th century, where the idea of integration was reinterpreted by the United States through Pan-Americanism, which confined the ideal of Latin American unity to interests that benefited the northern powers more than the continent itself.”
He urged countries loyal to Bolivarian thought to continue with the “evocation of Bolívar’s letter, because today it is not only a reminder of revolutionary ideals, but a call to renew the sovereign commitment and sentiment of the great and This resonates with a boost to regional unity.”
