The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, recalled this Sunday the 27th anniversary of the entry into force of the so-called Helms-Burton Law, designed by the United States Government, to reinforce the systematic blocking that has held over Cuba since the early 1960s.
Through a message on his twitter account the head of state He referred to this law as an instrument that “forms part of the immense framework that imperialism has built to implement its criminal policy of siege and economic siege against Cuba, ignoring International Law, before the indifferent gaze of Human Rights Organizations.
The Helms-Burton was born under the name of the Cuban Freedom and Democratic Solidarity Law, but it does not promote either of the two. The former president of the United States, Bill Clinton (1993-2001), put into effect this illegal mechanism that seeks to suffocate the Cuban economy and that has been denounced before the world community and international organizations.
The norm of Congressmen Jesse Helms and Dan Burton is contrary to international law and it only intensifies the obstacles that the economic, commercial and financial blockade that the North American nation imposes on the Caribbean island.
Since its implementation, the Department of State has notified companies investing in Cuba with Warning Letters of the so-called “confiscated properties.” According to the document, any non-US company that has dealings with Cuba may be subjected to legal reprisals and, in turn, may be prohibited from entering the United States.
International companies must choose between trading with Cuba or with the US. In a general sense, the law seeks to increase the climate of hostility in United States policy toward Cuba.
