Nicolás Maduro recommitted this Monday, on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, to “completely” eliminate misery in Venezuela in order to “build a society of equals.”
“In Revolution, ending poverty has been a priority for the State. In the midst of the onslaught of imperialism, we continue to serve the people, and our goal is to completely eradicate misery, to build a society of equals. We are going to achieve it! », He expressed in Twitter.
In Venezuela, no official poverty figures have been known since 2019, when the number of poor due to unsatisfied basic needs -including inadequate housing and without basic services- was 17%, while that of the extreme poor was 4%, according to the National Statistics Institute.
In addition, the entity has not published income poverty figures since 2015, two years before wages began to rapidly lose purchasing power as a result of hyperinflation, which began in 2017.
However, a measurement carried out in 2021 by the Andrés Bello Catholic University revealed that the country, which has accumulated the highest economic growth in its recent history this year, has 9 out of 10 of its inhabitants in poverty.
Experts expect this estimate to improve a little this year, but without great figures, since multiple factors are still present that predict the continuation of deprivation for the majority of the population.
