The military chief, General in Chief Vladimir Padrino López, announced that he was instructed by Nicolás Maduro to negotiate with the Colombian Defense Minister, Iván Velásquez Gómez, the resumption of bilateral military relations.

“I have received instructions from Commander in Chief Nicolás Maduro to immediately establish contact with the Colombian Defense Ministry to reestablish our military relations,” said the military minister, General in Chief. Vladimir Padrino Lopez, This Tuesday, August 9.

The information from Padrino López was issued during the act of transfer of command of the vice ministers of the FAN at Fort Terepaima, in the state of Lara.

On August 7, after the inauguration of the president Gustavo PetroMaduro reiterated that he was reaching out to the new president and the people of Colombia for the return of bilateral relations that have been broken since 2019.

“Patience has run out, I cannot continue to bear that the territory of Colombia is lent for an aggression against Venezuela, that is why I have decided to break all political and diplomatic relations with the fascist government of Colombia. Ambassadors and consuls must leave Venezuela within 24 hours,” Maduro said on February 24, 2019.

The decision was announced after the then president of Colombia, Iván Duque, recognized the president of the National Assembly (AN) from 2015, Juan Guaidó, as interim president. Bilateral rupture also affected the cooperation spaces that allowed the Colombian military and the Venezuelan military to coordinate for border security.

During the Duque government, Padrino López was one of the officials who, with his speech, joined the accusations of conspiracy against the former Colombian president that were issued from the Maduro administration.

Petro appointed as Minister of Defense Ivan Velasquez Gomez. This Tuesday, the official pointed out that “given rumors circulating on social networks, I must warn that the National Government has not yet appointed a new leadership of the Military Forces and the National Police».

The appointment of Velásquez Gómez has been perceived in Colombia as a message of fighting corruption and respect for human rights. The minister is a criminal lawyer from the University of Antioquia, who made a career in his department as a prosecutor and solicitor in the 1980s and 1990s, when drug-trafficking, guerrilla and paramilitary violence intensified in the region.
