The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, stated that the Pegasus software is being used to try to overthrow his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro and to harm Venezuela, while pointing out former President Iván Duque of being behind the entire espionage plan.
“Iván Duque bought this Pegasus system, we were warned, because he had access to the phones of important political, social, civil and military leaders of Venezuela and he was supporting Juan Guaidó in his time for a violent assault and a coup d’état; what happens is that they have not been able and will not be able to defeat us, but we were informed in real time of how it was used to conspire and try to kill us,” said the head of state this Wednesday during an interview with the Telesur channel.
Maduro insisted that the former Colombian president was behind the plans to try to kill important political, social and military leaders of the Bolivarian Revolution “and especially a persecution against me. He is a criminal who lives off obsessions,” he said.
The head of state accused Duque of being involved in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. “The hitmen who acted in Haiti were of Colombian origin and answered to the Nariño Palace,” he emphasized.
“If a serious international investigation is carried out, it would make clear the links between Iván Duque and the assassination of the president of Haiti, who had been in conflict with Colombian drug trafficking interests, which is why he was murdered,” he said.
Maduro argued that the Nariño Palace during the Duque administration “was a machine of crimes, murder and espionage.”
“I can say that the Pegasus system is being used to try to overthrow President Petro and, at the same time, to cause harm in Venezuela,” he clarified.
He also reiterated his claim that the plan to overthrow or assassinate President Petro is being led by “the same fascists who want to fill Venezuela with violence and try to kill the revolutionary leaders, that is: the CIA, the DEA. We have evidence that they are looking for hitmen and mercenaries from Bogotá.”
The UN must “get its act together”
For his part, Maduro believes that the United Nations (UN) must “get its act together or it will simply become a useless, useless entity.”
He attributed the world organisation’s setbacks to “the same people in charge in the West, in Europe, in the United States, the same elites who are today complicit with Nazi fascists like Netanyahu and Zelensky.”
Regarding the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, he said that there were two major themes. “The first is the rejection of Netanyahu’s Zionism, the fascism of Milei, of María Corina Machado and of all the allies who support these crimes; and the second theme is the support that Venezuela has received in the fight against sanctions, the blockade and fascism,” he stressed.
