This Wednesday, Nicolás Maduro held a telephone conversation with the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, to denounce the “escalation of threats” from the United States and its “serious implications for regional peace.”
During the call, the president made reference to the announcement by his American counterpart Donald Trump on the total blockade of sanctioned oil tankers.
Through a statement, Maduro described these statements as “expressions of an open colonial nature” and in turn criticized the comments of the White House deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, who pointed out that the United States created Venezuela’s oil industry and described the 1976 nationalization as “the biggest theft” in American history.

He also denounced the “political, diplomatic and economic siege against Venezuela, as well as the intensification of a campaign of falsehoods and military threats,” within the framework of the US military deployment in the Caribbean. These actions were described by Maduro as part of “barbaric diplomacy.” He assured that they are “unrelated to international coexistence.” In addition, he reiterated Venezuela’s willingness to defend “dignified diplomacy, dialogue and peace.”
Guterres urges to avoid armed conflicts
Guterres, for his part, stressed the need to “avoid any escalation or confrontation” and warned that an armed conflict in the region “lacks justification and would be sterile, with serious consequences for regional stability and the zone of peace in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
“The Secretary General reported that he will follow up on the situation and that he will accompany its approach in the Security Council, promoting de-escalation and always prioritizing diplomacy, dialogue and the peaceful resolution of controversies,” the statement concluded.
On Tuesday, Trump announced the “total blockade” of the sanctioned oil tankers, as part of a military operation in Caribbean waters, which the United States justifies in the fight against drug trafficking and pointed out that “the illegitimate Maduro regime is using the oil from these stolen fields to finance itself, narcoterrorism, human trafficking, murder and kidnapping.”
The tension intensified with the seizure of the tanker Skipper last week in international waters, which was transporting Venezuelan crude oil and is part of the actions against vessels allegedly linked to drug trafficking in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific since August.
