Maduro Guerra defends the amnesty as a “gesture of humanity” to close the confrontation

Chavista deputy Nicolás Maduro Guerra, son of Nicolás Maduro, stated on Thursday that the proposal for an amnestyapproved by Parliament in first discussion— is a “gesture of humanity” to close cycles of confrontation in Venezuela.

“An amnesty law is not just a legal document; it is a gesture of humanity to reunify families and close cycles of confrontation,” said the parliamentarian in a message published in X

Maduro Guerra, who is part of the parliamentary commission in charge of public consultation on the bill, added that It is necessary for Venezuela to travel “the paths of forgiveness and justice” in order to build the future.

“A united Venezuela, where reunion is the basis of our stability, is a desire of all,” he added.

Earlier, the president in charge, Delcy Rodríguez, called for political maturity to achieve reconciliation, during an event in the state of Bolívar (southern, bordering Brazil).

The legislation, proposed by Delcy Rodríguez last week, It was approved this Thursday in the first discussion in Parliamentcontrolled by a large Chavista majority and chaired by the president’s brother, deputy Jorge Rodríguez.

This bill must go through a public consultation process, and then be evaluated in a second and final debate in Parliament for its final approval.

What is known about the amnesty law?

The text excludes those prosecuted and convicted of serious violations of human rights, crimes against humanity, war crimes, intentional homicide, corruption and drug trafficking, said Chavista deputy Jorge Arreaza when presenting the legislation.

Before the parliamentary debate, Various local NGOs, human rights defenders, questioned that the text of the project had not been made public.

The bill was presented last week by the president in charge, in the middle of a process of releasing political prisoners that began on January 8, almost a week after the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

According to the NGO Foro Penal, at least 383 political prisoners have been released since January 8, when the president of Parliament announced the release of a “significant number” of people.
