Maduro declares two days of non-working celebration for the canonization of Venezuelan saints

Nicolás Maduro

Nicolás Maduro thanked Pope Francis and promised to pray for him “when they give the title of saint to José Gregorio Hernández, who had already been a saint for us for 70 years.”

This Friday afternoon, Nicolás Maduro decreed two days of non-working national celebration before the canonization of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles, who will be elevated to saints this Sunday, October 19, by Pope Leo XIV.

From the “Oscar López Rivera urbanism”, located in the San Agustín neighborhood (Caracas), Maduro signed the decree “so that the Venezuelan people come out in a single prayer to celebrate with our Catholic Church” on October 19 and 20 the canonization of the first Venezuelan saints.

Likewise, he thanked Pope Francis and promised to pray for him “when they give the title of saint to José Gregorio Hernández, who had already been a saint for us for 70 years.”

The Venezuelan Catholic Church prepares a series of activities to commemorate to both saints. Vigils, ringing of bells, masses and symbolic acts will accompany the transmission of the canonization from Rome, which begins at 4:00 am, Venezuela time.

This event, which will mark a milestone in the country’s Catholic faith, will be followed by a great national commemoration on October 25 at the Simón Bolívar Monumental Stadium in Caracas.

José Gregorio Hernández, known as the “Doctor of the Poor”, born in 1864 in Isnotú, Trujillo state, dedicated his life to medicine. He served those most in need with a devotion that transcended the professional and became a symbol of kindness and humility.

For her part, Mother Carmen Rendiles, founder of the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus, is an example of spiritual dedication. Born in Caracas in 1903, she overcame the physical limitations of being born without her left arm to become a religious leader who transformed lives through education and charity.

Maduro reports economic growth

Nicolás Maduro highlighted, during the inauguration of a “city of entrepreneurship”, that 18 consecutive quarters of economic growth have been completed, based on data announced by the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) a day earlier.

«It is not just any economic growth, because we could say 18 quarters of growth in the Gross Domestic Product (…), growth of the real economy, of the economy that produces potatoes, meat, tangerines, oil, gas, chicken, eggs, it produces everything. Of the economy that produces goods and services, that supplies the country, that exports more and more,” he said.

In addition, he said that this year there has been economic growth “close to 9%, which is a record, the highest economic growth in all of Latin America and the Caribbean (…) So Venezuela is at the forefront of the emergence of a new economic model, which has an objective.”

On the other hand, Maduro again dismissed the allegations about a possible negotiation behind his back by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez and the President of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, with the United States to guarantee the permanence of Chavismo in power and that was reported by the Miami Herald.

«My friends from Miami tried to create an intrigue, that we were divided, opposed. No one believed that, we are united by the love for our people, by hope (…) I confirm to our friends from the Miami Herald, they are imbeciles, they are stupid. Very very stupidsaid.
