Maduro attacks WhatsApp: “Go to hell and stop threatening Venezuelans”

Nicolás Maduro

Nicolás Maduro called cowards those who, in his opinion, hide behind anonymity and expressed that it is time for definitions, “either you are with violence or with peace, you are with the fascists or with the homeland, you are with imperialism or with Venezuela,” he indicated.

On Monday, August 5, President Nicolás Maduro announced that he is “going to break relations with WhatsApp,” considering that the application is used to “threaten Venezuela.” During a rally at the Miraflores Palace, he said that he will eliminate the app and replace it with Telegram.

In this regard, Maduro said that it is necessary to do so, “say no to WhatsApp outside Venezuela, because there criminals threaten youth, popular leaders, from phones in Colombia, the United States, Peru and Chile.”

He called cowards those who, in his opinion, hide behind anonymity and said that it is time for decisions, “either you are with violence or with peace, you are with the fascists or with the country, you are with imperialism or with Venezuela,” he said.

“It’s simple, let’s start with WhatsApp. They are threatening the military family, all officers, the police family, street leaders and the entire community that speaks out against it,” he said.

Maduro asked young people to voluntarily withdraw from the WhatsApp application and reiterated that there are other ways. “On Telegram I have 500 addresses, about 200 groups and I have WeChat, which is Chinese and is very good.”

“We tell WhatsApp to go to hell, stop threatening Venezuelans.”

According to the governor, the application is used by criminals, “with Colombian chips, gringos. You have already seen the face of fascism, you will never return to political power in Venezuela. You will not return and we need maximum awareness, maximum mobilization and continue improving our work methods.”

He concluded by calling for firmness, joy and mobilization. “We will win this battle and long live Venezuela, my beloved country.”

Last Sunday, August 4, Maduro also attacked social media, saying that he believes it is necessary to regulate TikTok and Instagram, claiming that these platforms multiply “hate and fascism.” This call for regulation comes in a context of growing tension and persecution of journalists and media outlets in Venezuela since the presidential elections on July 28.

“They are the main instruments that multiply hatred and fascism,” he said in a speech, in which he called on the nation’s Security Council and Defense Council to give him “recommendations” on the matter.
