Maduro at COP27 will demand compliance with climate agreements

The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, arrived this Sunday in the Egyptian spa city of Sharm el Sheikh, on the shores of the Red Sea, to participate in the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27).

“Here we will hold a long day of work to expose the firm position of Venezuela” against the destructive and polluting attacks of the capitalist system on our planet earth,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

In another tweet, he expressed his commitment to bring to COP27 the clamor of the peoples who “suffer the hard blows” generated by a destructive system that threatens the existence of humanity. “We expect concrete results in this world meeting, he underlined.

Upon his arrival in Egypt, Maduro told the press that the summit, which began today and runs until the 18th, should focus on finding answers about what humanity can do to make a qualitative leap and reverse the effects of the climate emergency.

The spa city of Sharm el Sheikh, on the shores of the Red Sea, is one of the main tourist destinations for foreigners and wealthy Egyptians. But for the next two weeks, the activity will be restricted to the events of the COP27 Climate Summit.

The United Nations conference is expected to receive more than 40,000 attendees, which it believes will be the climate summit with the most participants in history, according to the Egyptian Presidency of COP27.

The vast majority of heads of state attending COP27 are expected to participate in the so-called implementation summit, to be held on November 7 and 8.

Meanwhile, the rest of the days will be divided into thematic blocks, with water as a novelty in a climate summit, in which different workshops, round tables and conversations will be held

One of the key points of this COP27 will be loss and damage, something that was already focused on last year in Glasgow.

A large number of countries, especially in the South, advocated last year to create a financing fund dedicated to the damages and losses caused by climate change, but some developed nations, such as the United States, rejected this measure.

In addition to financing for less developed countries, this summit will work to take action and reduce greenhouse gases.
