The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, thanked the firm position of his Mexican counterpart, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador; for refusing to attend the Summit of the Americas, which is being held in Los Angeles, United States (USA), after the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the diplomatic event.
Through his account on the social network Twitter, the Venezuelan head of state stressed that “the countries of this continent deserve to be respected.”
“The decisive and firm position of the President of Mexico @lopezobrador_. We appreciate your solidarity with the peoples of Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela. The countries of this continent deserve to be respected. We will always defend the sovereignty and independence of peoples. Union!” the National President wrote on the social network.
In his traditional press conference, President López Obrador indicated that he will not attend the Summit. In his place, the nation’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, will represent Mexico.
«I am not going to the summit because not all the countries of America are invited. I believe in the need to change the policy that has been imposed for centuries. Exclusion, wanting to dominate for no reason, not respecting the sovereignty of countries, the independence of each country,” said the Mexican president.
«There can be no Summit of the Americas if all the countries of the American continent do not participate. There may be, but we consider that it is to continue with the old policy of interventionism, of disrespect for nations and their peoples », he added.
It should be remembered that, this year, Washington denied the invitation to the summit to Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela under the argument of disrespect for the human rights of these nations, a decision that generated severe criticism from various heads of state and government, as well as of political and social leaders and international organizations.
