Nicolás Maduro 23 abril

According to Maduro’s explanation, the presence of Glonass in the country will improve land, air and maritime transport services, as well as applications in precision agriculture, industrial monitoring and scientific experimentation.

Nicolás Maduro announced the start of operations of the Russian satellite navigation system GLONASS in the country. He said the goal is to optimize navigation services.

He explained that the “measurement station of the SS1-S route of the Glonass system” will begin operating this week, but did not specify a specific date or technical details about its installation or scope.

This project arises after the signing of an agreement in December of the year 2022 between the Bolivarian Agency for Special Activities (ABAE) and the Russian State Corporation Roscosmos, which seeks to expand the coverage and precision of the system in the western hemisphere.

Glonass, global satellite navigation system, for Russian, is the satellite navigation system developed by Russia as an alternative to American GPS.

According to Maduro’s explanation, the presence of Glonass in the country will improve land, air and maritime transport services, as well as applications in precision agriculture, industrial monitoring and scientific experimentation.

The authorities said the service will be free and for civil use, although no more operational details have been given for the common user.

The station will be located at the Capitán Manuel Ríos Aerospace Base, in the town of El Hat, Guárico state. The agreement with Russia also covers the training of Venezuelan professionals by Russian experts to operate and maintain the system.

Nicolás Maduro also reported the creation of the Venezuelan Robotics Federation, with “focus on technical education and a strong social commitment,” he said.
