Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores will be presented, in the afternoon of this Monday, January 5, in the federal court in southern New York, where they will appear for the first time before the judge
This Monday, January 5, US authorities transferred Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, to the Federal Court of the Southern District of New York, where he will appear to face the charges of drug trafficking and terrorism presented against him by the court.
According to images broadcast by the American media, the military convoy that took Maduro before the judge traveled through several streets of the city, heavily guarded by numerous police vehicles, until it reached a field, where it was placed in a helicopter with which it arrived at the court.
Wearing overalls and a brown jacket, with his hands cuffed and limping, Maduro and his wife were transported amid a large police deployment and guarded by dozens of agents from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The journey from the Brooklyn jail, where he has been detained since Saturday the 3rd, to the judicial headquarters was broadcast by American television channels and took at least 45 minutes.
Maduro and Flores’ hearing is scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon New York time (1:00 pm Venezuela time). At the appearance, the charges for which he is accused will be presented before the US justice system, his statement will be heard on whether or not he pleads guilty to the crimes and whether it will determine whether there will be any type of agreement.
Maduro faces charges that include drug trafficking, government corruption and crimes linked to terrorism.
The federal judge who will preside over the case will be Alvin Hellerstein, 92, who is a prestigious judge and one of the longest-serving active federal judges in the US judicial system, according to US media.
