Maduro affirms that popular awareness was key against the oil strike

The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, affirmed that popular consciousness was key to overthrowing the 2002 oil strike, whose call celebrates its 20th anniversary this Saturday.

“On April 9, 20 years ago, the extremist right called for a national strike, as part of the coup plan orchestrated by the US empire that sought to overthrow our Commander Chávez. Popular awareness was key during these days,” the president said on Twitter.

A series of measures announced by Chávez, which included the appointment of a new director of the state-owned Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), provoked the rejection of the business sector represented in Fedecamaras, which called a strike that was also joined by the Confederation of Venezuelan workers.

Within the framework of these actions, the strike led to a mobilization two days later in front of the Miraflores Palace, where riots and deaths were generated as part of the coup d’état that was forged against Chávez.
