MIAMI, United States. – This Monday, the Cuban singer-songwriter Willy Chirino offered a concert in Madrid, the capital of Spain, in a theater packed with Cubans, as a sample the live broadcast of CubaNet.
“Thank you for your presence, thank you for the applause, for the affection. We are fascinated to be here with you tonight”, Chirino told his audience after going on stage, where he interpreted his emblematic songs.
The concert offered in Madrid is part of the “Viva la libertad” tour, which will take the Cuban musician based in Miami to several cities in the European country. The series of concerts began this June 5 in Gran Canaria and had its second stop this Monday in Madrid.
In addition, concerts are planned in Barcelona (June 9) and Valencia (June 12), where the tour will conclude.
About the concerts, the musician recently explained a CubaNet that would be very happy, to dance and enjoy, although within that framework there would be songs that speak of the sad reality of the people of Cuba.
“The purpose of my music is to unite Cubans and bring them a message of love and hope about the changes towards democracy,” he added.
During his tour, the musician has sung a sauced version of the popular song “Escándalo”, which will appear on his next album. He has also sung some of his classics, such as “Our day is coming” and “Lajinera”.
Regarding the motivation to return to Spain after 15 years, he referred to the number of Cubans in the European country who follow his music with whom they “sing together and ask for freedom for Cuba.”
Asked about the possibility of performing again on the island, he explained that he has been planning to sing in his native country for years, but the Cuban authorities have never responded.
He added that if he could sing on a free site where Cubans could see him freely and were allowed to choose his repertoire without censorship, he would do it “tomorrow.”
“I dream of touching Cuban soil, the soil that saw me born,” said the musician, who has lived in the United States since he was 14 years old.
