The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, stated that he has a “firm intention” to visit Latin America in 2023, according to French diplomatic sources, although they did not specify the place or a specific date for the president to make the trip.
Macron’s eventual visit to the Latin American region has to do with his sympathy for various leftist leaders who have won presidential elections in various countries, the latest being Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil.
Together with the elected president of the Amazonian nation, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro; the one from Chile, Gabriel Boric and the Argentine Alberto Fernández, with whom Macron has had several meetings since 2019. According to French diplomatic sources, the French head of state wants to draw up a “joint road map” with Brazil that touches on issues such as the environmental Protection.
“Brazil is an essential actor in the region, the main economy, with which we also have an 800-kilometer border through French Guyana,” the sources stated. The protection of the Amazon and the fight against deforestation appear as two fundamental axes.

Since he came to power in 2017, Macron has not made any bilateral trips to Latin America and his only presence on the continent was at a G20 summit in Buenos Aires in 2018.
However, the recent approaches with Latin America by Macron were made with the issue of Venezuela, after convened in Paris to the heads of the delegations of the ruling party and the opposition to talk with Petro and Fernández about a possible solution to the Venezuelan crisis; meeting from which the Elysee says it feels a certain “opening” of the administration of Nicolás Maduro to the crisis.
French diplomatic sources warn that this new chapter in the negotiations will depend to a large extent on the lifting of sanctions by the United States, although they maintain the premise that they will help the stability of Latin America and that it can motivate a clearly democratic solution.
