María Corina Machado highlighted the strength, dignity and hope that all the people affected by government repression have had.
The opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, María Corina Machado, assured that she will not rest until she achieves the freedom of all political prisoners in Venezuela and that “all of Venezuela can embrace itself in full democracy and freedom.”
After the beginning of the release of a “significant number” of political prisoners in the country, Machado released an audio in which he sends a message of encouragement to all family members.
«The truth that was persecuted and silenced for years manages to make its way despite arbitrariness, cruelty and fear. For many months, many years, even decades, their families have sustained the fierce weight of a sentence that was not in any file, that of waiting, that of silence, that of the place that remained standing while the country seemed to collapse on top of them,” he begins in the audio.
Machado highlighted the strength, dignity and hope that all people affected by government repression have had. And although “nothing returns the stolen years,” he emphasized the significance of what began to happen this Thursday the 8th with the releases of people detained for political reasons.
“This day matters because it recognizes what we always knew, that injustice is not going to be eternal and that the truth, even though it is very wounded, ends up breaking through.”
He asked to receive this moment as “an act of moral restitution” and as confirmation that each person’s fortitude was not in vain.

This January 8, the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announced the release of a “significant number” of political prisoners without specifying the exact number, much less providing a list with the names of the beneficiaries of the measure.
He assured that it is a “unilateral gesture” that seeks to “consolidate peace and peaceful coexistence among all, without distinction of political, religious, economic, social color.”
After the releases, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, assured that given Venezuela’s cooperation with his administration, he decided to cancel a second wave of attacks that he had initially planned. He described the releases as a “very important and intelligent” gesture.
