María Corina Machado said that the circumstances surrounding Edmundo González in Venezuela did not allow him to “perform all the functions associated with the leadership that this moment requires. From outside he can do so with much greater protection and security.” She asked citizens to “act with resilience” because she predicts “days of great intensity and danger.”
Opposition leader María Corina Machado spoke on Monday 9 about the departure of Edmundo González Urrutia from the country, and asserted that his exile in Spain does not diminish “the legitimacy” as president-elect or “the agenda and strategy” of the opposition to achieve recognition of the “victory” of last July 28.
“How does the place where we are, the nature of the struggle and our strength change? In my opinion, absolutely nothing changes. The urgency remains, and the legitimacy remains. The agenda and the strategy remain,” Machado said at a press conference, in which he did not answer questions, to announce a «proclamation of union to the nation».

The opposition member commented that the process that led to González Urrutia’s departure “will be made known in due time,” but said that regarding the “complexity of the process” no media outlet “has all the details.”
“Edmundo González Urrutia, under the circumstances in which he was in Venezuela, could not perform all the functions associated with the leadership that this moment requires. From outside he can do so with much greater protection and security,” Machado said.
He also asked citizens to “act with resilience” because he predicts “days of great intensity and danger.”
In this context, María Corina Machado demanded that Venezuelans “be consistent between the fact that we are facing a criminal regime, with practices of state terrorism as the IACHR has said, and our actions.”
He also urged the Armed Forces and police officers to “fulfill their duty” and reject orders for repression.

As for the international community, he requested that they ratify the recognition of Edmundo González “as president-elect”; that they denounce and make evident “the magnitude of the repression to which we are all subjected,” as well as increase the cost of that repression in all the corresponding international instances; and that they support the transition “that has already begun.”
During the reading of the proclamation, it was reported that the opposition leader will hold a press conference in the coming days together with the Comando Con Vzla to clarify aspects of the diplomat’s departure and the steps to follow.
“We all know that July 28 represents the end of a political cycle and the beginning of a new era. We all know what it took to get there (…) We have to assume that everyone inside and outside Venezuela, we all know what happened, and it is not the same anymore,” said Machado.
