Machado calls for “maximum pressure” against Venezuela

Far-right opposition leader María Corina Machado has called on foreign powers to apply “maximum pressure” against the Venezuelan state, while repeatedly refusing to recognize the results of the July 28 presidential election, in which President Nicolás Maduro was re-elected.

“A mechanism of simultaneous pressure must be activated, coordinated with intelligence and creativity. If there is no pressure, there will be no negotiation,” Machado said Thursday during a press conference with international media.

Given the exhaustion of his constant calls to take to the streets and to civil disobedience by Venezuelans, he considered that “it is not necessary to call people to the streets at all times” because “the people have already expressed themselves.”

In this regard, she said that the international community “can do a lot to help us. I am willing to apply maximum pressure”; the same policy that former US President Donald Trump implemented against the country during his term, which left almost a thousand Unilateral Coercive Measures that deeply affected the economic and social life of Venezuelans.

The disqualified politician also believes that greater involvement by the United States is necessary to mediate in what she considers the “Venezuelan crisis.”

“We need more commitment from President Joe Biden to the crisis in Venezuela,” he said.
