The opposition political party Primero Justicia reported this Thursday the release of the former deputy Macario González, Popular Will activist (VP), after the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted him precautionary measures, which also protect his family.
Through a publication in X, the organization expressed: “We celebrate the release of Macario González, former mayor of Iribarren and leader of (the region of) Lara (west), who spent months unjustly detained by the Sebin (Bolivarian Intelligence Service).”
The announcement comes in a context in which, according to PJ, there continue to be “arbitrary” arrests and releases“for political reasons in Venezuela. For the party, each release shows that there are still “prisoners of conscience, irregular processes and a systematic pattern of persecution.”
On Wednesday, the IACHR confirmed that it granted precautionary measures to González, 73 years old, as well as other people such as former presidential candidate Enrique Márquez, Merys Torres de Sequea and Ana Zoris Gutiérrez Torres, considering them in a “serious and urgent” situation.
The commission explained that I didn’t know the whereabouts of the former deputy since September and highlighted that his relatives faced the “impossibility” of “activating effective internal actions” to protect their rights.
The NGO Penal Forum counts as of November 10 a total of 882 political prisoners in the country, of which the location of 59 is unknown.
