MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban journalist light escobarfreelance newspaper reporter 14ymedioreceived one of the International Journalism Awards from the Spanish newspaper The world in the category of “Free Press”.
Escobar, who lives in Cuba, is currently under house arrest to prevent her from carrying out her work as a reporter.
In addition to Escobar, the Russian journalist exiled in Riga Alexey Kovalev was recognized, specifically in the category of “Best journalistic work”, according to reports The world this Thursday.
The Spanish newspaper assured that it was not only celebrating the twentieth edition of its awards, but also “freedom of expression and the free flow of information” by recognizing “two reporters who, from different parts of the globe, are an example of the values fundamentals of the profession: courage and rigor”.
With respect to Escobar, the jury highlighted his “denunciation work and his courage” to defend free information, despite the persecution of the Cuban regime. Silvia Román, chief editor of the international section of The world and member of the jury, highlighted the importance of “not forgetting” the profiles of professionals who work under Escobar’s conditions.
The prizes, which were announced this Thursday morning, will be delivered after the summer. The awards, endowed with 20,000 euros and a commemorative sculpture of the artist Martín Chirino, were instituted to recognize “rigour, journalistic value, ethical commitment and the defense of freedom of expression.”
The awards are held in memory of journalists from The world Julio A. Parrado, a victim of the Iraq war, Julio Fuentes, assassinated in Afghanistan, and José Luis López de Lacalle, a columnist for the Spanish newspaper assassinated by ETA.
Escobar and Kovalev join a long list of journalism professionals who, over the last two decades, have celebrated with The world the importance of the profession, specified the publication.
