Lunar eclipse will be visible throughout Cuba on the night of September 17-18

Un eclipse parcial de Luna

MIAMI, United States. – The Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy of Cuba advertisement This Wednesday, during the night of September 17-18, 2024, a partial lunar eclipse will occur, which can be observed throughout the national territory.

The astronomical phenomenon will also be visible in Europe, Africa and much of America, except in the far west.

In Cuba, the eclipse will begin at 8:39 p.m. on September 17, when the Moon enters the Earth’s penumbra. The Moon’s entry into the umbra, the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow, is scheduled for 10:11 p.m. Meanwhile, the moment of greatest darkness, that is, the maximum of the eclipse, will occur at 10:44 p.m.

The partial eclipse will end at 11:16 p.m. and the Moon will fully exit Earth’s shadow at 12:49 a.m. on Sept. 18.

This type of eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the lunar surface. Unlike total eclipses, in partial eclipses only a part of the Moon is darkened, allowing us to observe the contrast between the illuminated portion and the one under the Earth’s shadow.

In the early hours of Tuesday, November 8, 2022, the Island witnessed a total lunar eclipse, which was also visible in Asia, Australia and the rest of America.

On that occasion, the total lunar eclipse lasted one hour and 25 minutes. In penumbra mode, it lasted five hours and 52 minutes, and in partial eclipse mode, three hours and 39 minutes.

Scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States have noted that the Moon would appear red/orange when reflecting the light from sunrises and sunsets on Earth.

This was the second total lunar eclipse of 2022. The previous one had occurred in May. The next such event will occur on March 13, 2025.
