Lula will not participate in the last presidential debate before the second round in Brazil

The pollster IPEC published the results of its most recent survey on Monday, in which it asked Brazilians about their intention to vote for the presidential elections on October 30. The consultation showed that former president Lula da Silva dropped one percentage point, to position himself at 50%, compared to Bolsonaro with 43% of the support

Former President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva will not participate in the next presidential debate, scheduled for this Friday the 21st, reported the Brazilian Television System (SBT for its acronym in Portuguese).

“The Brasil da Esperança Coalition thanks you for the invitation and informs you that, unfortunately, due to incompatibility of agendas, the candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will not be able to attend the debate held by SBT and allied broadcasters in this second round,” reported the Workers’ Party campaign to the media.

Meanwhile, the current president, Jair Bolsonaro, confirmed his attendance; however, the format will be replaced by a one-hour interview with the president, who is running for re-election.

The last debate between the two candidates, last Sunday the 16th, was another give and take between the two candidates, who walked through various issues of both presidencies to win points in front of the audience.

Lula especially criticized Bolsonaro’s handling of the covid-19 pandemic, while both candidates accused each other of corruption.

“You delayed the vaccine. And the hard fact is that their negligence caused the deaths of 680,000 people when more than half could have been saved. In the history of any government in the world, there is no one who has played with the pandemic and with death as you did, “said the former president.

In response, Bolsonaro denied the accusations and said that Lula was lying. He added that he initially did not purchase vaccines in an effort to prevent corruption. “There was no corruption because there was no vaccine in Brazil. So, Mr. Lula, don’t keep lying, it’s bad even for her age”.

President Bolsonaro has also accused Lula and his Workers’ Party of having ties to organized crime in the country. In response, Lula also said that Bolsonaro had ties to people connected to organized crime.

The pollster IPEC published the results of its most recent survey on Monday, in which it asked Brazilians about their intention to vote for the presidential elections on October 30. The consultation showed that former President Lula da Silva dropped one percentage point, to position himself at 50%, compared to Bolsonaro with 43% of the support.

The main polling firms in Brazil foresaw the victory of ‘Lula’ against Bolsonaro, but calculated that the difference would be between 10 and 15 percentage points, when in reality it was only 5.2%. The results of the first round gave a 48.4% favorability to ‘Lula’ and 43.2% to Bolsonaro, opening the window for the ballot.
