President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva embarks this Sunday (21), at 10am, to the United States (USA) to attend the 80 UN General Assembly. The assembly takes place between September 22 and 24 in New York. Lula will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, and other ministers and experts who are part of the entourage.
As a tradition since 1955, Brazil will be the first member state to speak at the opening of the general debate. Lula will speak on Tuesday morning, shortly after the speeches of the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and the president of the 80th General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock.
In addition to presenting priorities of Brazilian foreign policy, the president should participate in meetings that discuss from the scenario in Palestine to the climate crisis, in preparation for the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which takes place in Belém in November.
Palestine
During the trip to New York, Lula participates, on Monday (22), in the second session of the high-level international confederation for peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the solution of two states, convened by France and Saudi Arabia.
According to Itamaraty, the Brazilian government expects the moment to serve as an opportunity for more countries to recognize the Palestine as State – In addition to Brazil, another 147 nations already recognize Palestine. Countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Portugal expressed interest in doing the same during the UN meeting.
Democracy
On Wednesday (24), the president participates in the second edition of the event in defense of democracy and against extremism, accompanied by representatives of about 30 countries. In addition to Brazil, the initiative of Chile, Gabriel Boric, and Spain, Pedro Sánchez.
According to Itamaraty, the initiative aims to advance active diplomacy, which promotes international cooperation against the deterioration of institutions, misinformation, hatred discourse and social inequality. The first meeting on democracy took place in Chile in July, when a joint statement was published.
Climate crisis
Also on the 24th, an event on climate crisis-another priority of Lula’s agenda in New York-will be co-president by Brazil and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The meeting should include the presentation of new certain certain contributions (NDC).

Another agenda is the meeting promoted by the Global Adaptation Center to discuss mechanisms of adaptation to climate change.
The Brazilian delegation should also participate, from September 22, of New York 2025 Climate Week. The meeting, which promotes about 500 events with leaders of governments and civil society on the planet, occurs since 2009 simultaneously to the UN General Assembly and serves as a preparatory event to COP30.
