The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaexpressed his support for his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, after the start of an investigation into alleged irregularities in the financing of his campaign in 2022.

«As someone who has been a victim of all types of political persecution, I express my solidarity with President Gustavo Petro. Due legal process cannot be renounced, especially when what is at stake is the will of the people expressed democratically through the ballot box,” Lula Da Silva said on his social networks, this Thursday, October 1.

Lula’s words come after the National Electoral Commission (CNE) of Colombia approved by seven votes in favor and two against the opening of an investigation against President Petro for exceeding the limit on electoral expenses.

“The CNE never can, nor does it have the power to investigate the president of the Republic. This is the beginning of the coup d’état,” said President Gustavo Petro on Tuesday, October 8.

As reported by the W Radiothe charges against Petro’s campaign are due to the violation of the spending limit in the first electoral round for $3,709,361,342 and in the second round for $1,646,386,773.
