Former Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim assured Télam that the objective of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s statements at a meeting with businessmen held in the city of São Paulo was “to warn clearly about the pressures that international organizations exert in the region, leaving presidents who have the best intentions in very difficult situations.”
Asked by this agency about the interpretation of Lula’s statements at that meeting, Amorim stated that he was “certain that the purpose of the former president’s statements was to clearly warn about the pressures that international organizations exert in the region, leaving presidents who have the best intentions in very difficult situations.
Thus he spoke about the conversation that Lula had on Tuesday night with the group Esfera Brasilwhich brings together companies from Brazil, in which -according to the press in that country- the PT candidate spoke of the debt contracted by Argentina with the International Monetary Fund during the administration of Mauricio Macri and the decisions adopted with the agency for the management of the Front of All.
According to information published in the Brazilian media, at the dinner with the businessmen, Lula stated that one of the keys to the victory of the FdT in the 2019 elections in Argentina was that Macri “was encouraged by the IMF to request a loan of $40 billion.”
Also, Brazil’s presidential candidate analyzed the political consequences of “wanting to solve the IMF problem.”
On January 28, from his official Twitter account, Lula himself had stated that he was “very happy” because “the Argentine government, under the leadership of my friend Alberto Fernández, has managed to negotiate an agreement in relation to the country’s debt that preserves sovereignty and the possibility of caring for development and social justice for the Argentine people”.
Amorim was Foreign Minister of Brazil during the presidencies of Itamar Franco (1993-1994) and the two of Lula himself (2003-2010), he also headed the Defense portfolio in the administration of Dilma Rousseff (2011-2014); he is considered one of the men consulted by the metallurgical leader and former head of state.
