After the Senate approved the bill that exempts those earning more than R$5,000, the Minister of the Institutional Relations Secretariat, Gleisi Hoffmann, said that the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva dshould sanction the legislation, on Tuesday (11th), as soon as he returns to Brasília. Lula is at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, in Belém (PA).
“As important as exempting those who earn up to 5 thousand reais, it is taxing those who earn a lot in this country”, stated the minister. She mentioned that around 141 thousand people who earn more than R$600 thousand per year pay an effective charge of 2.5% on average. “We are progressively increasing this charge to 10%. This is called tax justice.”
She also celebrated that, for the first time, dividends received will be taxed. “This is a big step. It is historic from the point of view of seeking tax justice in Brazil.”
Gleisi understands that it is still necessary to advance income and wealth taxation. “We celebrate this victory, which is not a victory for the government, but for the Brazilian working people.”
Correction of injustices
The project’s rapporteur in the Senate, Renan Calheiros, defended the proposal and highlighted that the decision would be historic for the country.
“The zero tax project is one of the most important and most anticipated in recent years.”
Renan pointed out that the Executive’s proposal corrects injustices and contributes to social well-being “by promoting tax justice, reducing the tax burden on low income earners and increasing the burden on the super rich”.
