President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Thursday (30) that he will seek a respectful relationship with US President Donald Trump, sworn in for a new term last week. The statement was given during an interview with journalists at the Planalto Palace.
“I have already ruled Brazil with Republican President, I have already ruled with Democratic President. And my relationship is always the same, the relationship is from a sovereign state with another sovereign state. Trump was elected to govern the United States and I was elected To govern Brazil, “said Lula.
If the US President fulfills recent statements that he could impose export rates against products from countries such as Brazil, Lula stressed that the government’s stance will be reciprocity, with reverse taxation of US products imported by Brazil. “If he taxes Brazilian products, there will be reciprocity from Brazil to taxes American products. It’s simple, there is no difficulty.”
Lula also criticized the US President’s decision to withdraw financial contributions to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the departure of the Paris Agreement to contain global warming. “Regression of human civilization,” said the Brazilian president. He also indicated that Trump must respect the sovereignty of other countries by mentioning recent controversies between the American and the governments of Greenland and Panama.
Relationship with Congress
In the domestic field, Lula was asked about the expectation for the elections in the new directors of the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate, which occur this weekend.
In the House, so far, two deputies have officially declared themselves as candidates. Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) is the great favorite, with the support of virtually every countertops, from the governors to opposition, including the current mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). Deputy Pastor Henrique Vieira (PSOL-RJ) also officialized his candidacy for the left opposition.
In the Senate, the favorite is David Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP). He was president of the house from 2019 to 2020 and has broad support from the main benches to return to office.
“The President of the Republic does not get into this. My Senate President is the one who wins. And the House is the one who wins. Who wins, I will respect and establish a new relationship. We have already demonstrated that there is no difficulty in Government if you are very happy to talk, “Lula said.
The president stressed that he will continue to bet on the political articulation he has been maintaining with Congress.
