The polls published to date give Lula da Silva a favorite in front of a fragmented right between several possible applicants who try to absorb the political capital of Jair Bolsonaro, disabled by attacking democratic institutions and sowing suspicions about the elections
The president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, said he will appear at re -election in 2026 if he is “100 % health” and “with the same energy” he has now.
“If I find myself well and I think I can be a candidate, I will be a candidate, but it is not my priority now,” said the 79 -year president in an interview with a local radio, within the framework of his visit to Belém to meet in situ the Works on the Climate Summit (COP30).
However, he said that he must “be aware” of his advanced age and, therefore, “cannot lie to anyone” and “much less” lie to himself. In addition, he recalled that being a candidate implies “a discussion with many political parties and with Brazilian society.”
“It is very early to talk about the 2026 elections,” he said, and then affirm that he still intends to “deliver a lot” to the end of his government.
Lula is in the third of his four years of mandate and will turn 81 when the presidential elections of October 2026 are held.
The polls published to date give him a favorite in front of a fragmented right among several possible applicants who try to absorb the political capital of Jair Bolsonaro, disabled by attacking democratic institutions and sowing suspicions about the elections.
On the other hand, the Workers Party (PT) only thinks of Lula as its candidate by 2026, although the former union leader seems not to have yet decided.
And it is that Lula has had some health problems since he assumed the presidency, on January 1, 2023. In December of last year he underwent an emergency surgical intervention to drain an intracranial hemorrhage derived from a fall that suffered at home some weeks before.
The surgery forced him to spend several days under intensive care, although he had no neurological sequel, according to his medical team.
In November 2022, shortly after winning the elections against Bolsonaro, he was hospitalized for the withdrawal of a small area of ”leukoplasia” – white stones – on the vocal cords.
Already in power, in March 2023, he had a bronchopneumonia that forced him to postpone an important state visit to China.
