President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva sanctioned on Wednesday (30) the law prohibiting the use of living animals in laboratory tests for the development of personal hygiene products, cosmetics and perfumes. The approval of the standard occurred in a ceremony at the Planalto Palace with the presence of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva.
Lula classified the initiative as a law that “defends animal sovereignty”.
“The creatures that have as their natural habitat planet Earth will no longer be guinea pigs of experiences in this country,” he said.
The sanctioned text had been approved by the National Congress at the beginning of July.
According to the federal government, From the publication of the law, the sanitary authorities will have a period of two years to implement measures That, among other points, ensure recognition of alternative methods and adopt a strategic plan to ensure the dissemination of these methods in the national territory, as well as establishing measures to inspect information from testing.
The standard also establishes that products and ingredients that have been manufactured before the law may be marketed. New products must no longer test on animals.
The institution of the norm, according to Minister Marina Silva, represents a milestone for the country, which advances in strengthening a fairer and more balanced coexistence between humans, animals and the environment, as is already reality in other countries.
“When we learn to protect other life forms and other forms of existence, we are demonstrating an elevation in terms of humanity,” said the minister.
