Lula said Brazil will continue to welcome Venezuelan migrants with “great respect”

Lula da Silva stressed that migrants arriving in Brazil must be treated well and that the State is obliged to give them the best possible conditions while they are in the Amazonian country.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Wednesday, September 11, that his country will continue to welcome Venezuelan migrants who wish to move to that country in search of a better quality of life.

This was highlighted by Lula in an interview with Radio Norte FM, where he said that the foreign minister, Mauro Vieira, has defined guidelines regarding the treatment that should be given to migrants coming from the country.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs [Mauro Vieira] “There is guidance and determination from the Presidency of the Republic to treat with great respect people who come to Brazil out of necessity for survival. You know that human beings are a bit nomadic, when they have nowhere to eat, when they have nowhere to work, they look for other places,” said the president.

He stressed that these people must be treated well and that the State has the “obligation” to help the state of Roraima – bordering Venezuela – so that education and health can be provided to those who arrive there “because we do not want these people to come here and they have an even greater need than they had in Venezuela.”

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva hopes that “Venezuela will return to normality” and that “those people can return” to their country “as quickly as possible,” but in the meantime, he guaranteed them a warm welcome.

He said he plans to visit the state of Roraima – without revealing the date for this yet – to talk with the governor, Antonio Denarium, about this issue and coordinate actions that will guarantee good treatment to those who travel to that state in Brazil.

According to Infobaethe Amazonian nation is facing a wave of migration following the results of the July 28 elections in Venezuela, coupled with information from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), which indicated that after the electoral process, asylum applications from Venezuelan citizens have increased by 25%, reaching a total of 1,907 applications.

In August, the city of Pacaraima, the main gateway to the Brazilian state of Roraima, received 11,325 new migrants, a significant increase compared to the 8,477 of the previous month. In addition, 4,393 people submitted applications for residency in Brazil, representing an increase of 9%.
