President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva received a group of Yawalapiti Indians, one of the 16 ethnic groups that inhabit the Xingu Indigenous Land in Mato Grosso. The meeting took place this Thursday (20), at the Palace of Alvorada, where Lula fulfilled the schedule in the morning.
During the meeting, according to a statement by the Planalto Palace, the president discussed topics relevant to the territory, such as food security, climate change and strengthening of cultures. The Xingu Ti occupies an area of more than 2.6 million hectares, in a transition zone between the Cerrado and the Amazon, where they live more than 5,500 indigenous people from different ethnicities: Yawalapiti, Aweti, Ikpeng, Kaiabi, Kalapalo, Kamaiurá, Kĩsêdjê, Kuikuro, Matipu, Mehinako, Nahukuá, Naruvotu, Wauja, Tapayuna, Trumai and Yudja.
The meeting was attended by Cacique Tapi Yawalapiti, Anuiá Yawalapiti (Coordinator of the Ponto of Indigenous Cultures), Lappa Yawalapiti (Coordinator of the Ponto of Indigenous Cultures) and Juliano George Basso (Coordinator of the Multiethnic Village).
Also according to Planalto, Lula pledged to visit Xingu’s Indigenous Land later this year to deepen the discussions and announce measures. At the time, the president must visit the Cacique Raoni Metuktire, to pay tribute to leader Kayapó, internationally recognized for the defense of the rights of indigenous peoples.
Agenda
In the early afternoon of this Thursday, Lula embarked for São Paulo, where will make a battery of routine exams to which it usually submits annually. The exams take place at the Syrian-Lebanese hospital, but the president will not be hospitalized.
Lula will sleep in the state capital and, this Friday (21), there is an agenda in Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro, for the signing ceremony of the concession contract of the ITG02 Terminal, which was bought by Cedro Participações SA in auction last year . The Port Terminal, one of the most important in the country, will receive R $ 3.58 billion in investments in the coming years.
The return of the president to Brasilia is scheduled for Saturday.
