President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva lamented the 17 deaths resulting from the accident with a bus, which occurred on Friday night (17) in Pernambuco. THE vehicle collided on rocks on the side of the road and hit a sandbank after having invaded the opposite lane, on BR-423.
“With great sadness, I learned of the serious accident involving a tourist bus on BR-423, in the countryside of Pernambuco, which took the lives of at least 17 people and left others injured. To the families and friends of the victims, I express my most sincere condolences and solidarity in this moment of so much pain”, the president posted this Saturday (18) on social media.
The bus was carrying 40 passengers when the driver lost control. The causes are still being investigated by the Federal Highway Police (PRF).
The driver suffered only minor injuries and underwent a breathalyzer test, which showed a negative result for alcohol consumption, as reported by the PRF in a note.
The PRF also reported that there is evidence that some passengers were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, which may have contributed to the severity of the deaths and injuries. Rescue and forensic teams continue to work at the scene to determine the causes of the accident and identify all victims.
