President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been meeting with ministers since 10 am this Wednesday (29) to discuss developments in the Operation Containmentwhich took place in Rio de Janeiro. The emergency meeting is taking place at Palácio da Alvorada.
The police action, which took place this Tuesday (28) in the Alemão and Penha complexes, in the state capital, left more than 130 dead, but the body count – many still being removed from the forested area by the residents of these communities – is not yet complete.

- Marcelo Freixo, president of Embratur.
This Tuesday (28), the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, acknowledged that the operation exceeded the “limits and competencies” of the state government and demanded more federal support in combating criminal organizations that operate in the state.

Just yesterday, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, stated that he had not received a request for support for Operation Containment and the federal government is now studying the next actions.
State security forces carried out the most lethal operation in historyto combat the Red Command in the Alemão and Penha complexes. In retaliation, the criminals closed 35 streets in different parts of the city, with vehicles crossed, garbage cans, barricades and piles of burning materials.
For experts, the operation had a major impact on the capital of Rio de Janeiro and did not achieve the objective of containing organized crime, on the contrary, actions like this only strengthen violence.
Lula arrived in Brasília on Tuesday night, after a trip to Southwest Asia.
A meeting led by the Civil House had already begun to discuss the issue this Tuesday, before Lula’s arrival.
Rui Costa responded to the request of the governor of Rio de Janeiro to transfer of 10 inmates to federal prisons who would have led actions from within the chain that culminated in chaos in the city.
