President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended this Saturday (16), in Rio de Janeiro, the holding of the G20 Social at the bloc’s next annual meetings.
Lula met this morning with the secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres.
In a video released on social media, the president stated that the G20 Social must be adopted as a practice to listen to the demands of social movements and civil society.
“For the first time, we are doing G20 Social. I hope it becomes a G20 culture. I had invited President Ramaphosa [da África do Sul] so that he could go with me to the closing of the G20 Social to motivate him to hold the G20 Social in South Africa. We will convince other presidents who will preside over the G20 to adopt the G20 Social as a practice”, stated Lula.
In a note, the Presidency of the Republic informed that Lula and the secretary general talked about the G20 Social, the schedule of the G20 Summit, the progress of COP29 and the negotiations on climate and environment taking place in Baku (Azerbaijan), in parallel to G20 activities.
Discussions
For the first time, the G20 Social is being held to enable the participation of organized civil society in discussions within the bloc, which brings together the largest economies, the European Union and the African Union. South Africa, which will host the G20 meeting in 2025, has already confirmed that it will repeat the G20 Social.
Earlier, this Saturday, the final document of the 2024 G20 Social meeting was approved. The declaration will be delivered to the presidents of Brazil and South Africa.
