Lula heads to the 79th UN Assembly in New York

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrives in New York (USA) this Saturday evening, where he will participate in the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations. Lula will speak on Tuesday (24) at the opening of the event and is expected to talk about the fight against hunger and the climate crisis. By tradition, the president of Brazil is always the first country to speak since the 10th session of the summit.Lula heads to the 79th UN Assembly in New York

Last Tuesday (17), the Secretary of Multilateral Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), Ambassador Carlos Márcio Cozendey, spoke about the priority themes present in Lula’s speech. “We can expect that they [temas] follow a little of the agenda that Brazil proposed for the G20, that is, talk about inclusion, fighting hunger, energy transition and reform of global governance”, said Cozendey.

The United Nations General Assembly is one of the main bodies of the UN and brings together the 193 member states of the organization, with each nation having the right to one vote. For Brazil, the opening of the UNGA General Debate allows the presentation of the country’s priorities, both internally and internationally.

A new session of the General Assembly begins annually in September with the opening of the general debate. The 79th UNGA will be chaired by Ambassador Philémon Yang of Cameroon, who will lead the Assembly’s work until September 2025. Heads of State or Government are expected to attend, creating a unique opportunity to strengthen relations and dialogue among world leaders.

Pact for the Future

Before that, however, Lula will participate in the opening of the Future Summit, which will take place this Sunday (22). He will be the second to speak at the two-day meeting, which will bring together world leaders to discuss ways to face emerging security crises, accelerate the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and address the threats and opportunities of digital technologies.

As a result, the Future Summit should produce the Compact for the Future document, negotiated among member states to strengthen global cooperation and establish commitments to better adapt to current challenges, for the future of renewed and effective multilateralism, for the benefit of future generations.
