When remembering the three years since the attempted coup d’état, which took place in January 2023, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Thursday (8) that the acts carried out at the time serve to remind us that democracy is not an unshakable achievement.
“It will always be a work in progress, subject to permanent harassment from old and new candidates for dictators. Therefore, democracy needs to be cared for with care and defended tooth and nail, day after day.”
During an official event at the Palácio do Planalto, Lula highlighted the need to demonstrate that democracy is “more than a nice word in the dictionary” and that it requires the construction of a fairer and less unequal country, “with more rights and fewer privileges”.
“It’s more than the desire and the right to vote on the day of the decision – and then keep the voter registration card for the next four years. Democracy requires the effective participation of society in government decisions”, he said.
“Perhaps the most striking proof of the vigor of Brazilian democracy is the trial of coup plotters by the STF [Supremo Tribunal Federal]”, he concluded.
Dosimetry
Earlier, the president fully vetoed Bill No. 2,162 of 2023, known as Dosimetry PLapproved in December by the National Congress. The text provides for the reduction of sentences for those convicted of the undemocratic acts of January 8 and the attempted coup d’état.
“They all had ample rights of defense, were tried with transparency and impartiality. And, at the end of the trial, convicted on the basis of robust evidence, and not on the basis of serial illegalities, mere convictions or [apresentações de] Fake Powerpoint”, he said.
