the mayor of Montevideo, Caroline Cossewill deliver to the Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, the “Greener” distinction. Through this distinction, the commune recognizes those relevant personalities who make a substantial contribution to the environment, highlighting their commitment to its care.
The Brazilian president will have the opportunity to thank for the distinction next Wednesday, January 25, during a public ceremony at 3:00 p.m. on the esplanade of the Montevideo City Hall. The speech will take place from the balcony on the first floor of the IM building and can be followed by the public from the square.
Elected democratically three times, during his terms Lula Da Silva has demonstrated his strong commitment to caring for the environment in his country, in the region and in the world, and one of his premises is to try to stop or reverse the severe damage that the administration of the far-right Jair Bolsonaro caused the Amaazonia.
The leftist president has implemented sectoral and transversal public policies that have involved all of civil society, the productive sectors and the institutions of his country. During his first two presidencies, he managed reduce deforestation in the Amazon by 80%. In his third term, he has vowed to eliminate it altogether.
The president has also pointed out that only Brazil has the conditions to become an environmental power, initiating an energy and ecological transition, and setting the goal of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions and zero deforestation in the Amazon.
These premises are aligned with the environmental priorities of Montevideo, where it has focused on creating a comprehensive public policy called “Greener Montevideo”, which seeks to promote a cultural change through the responsible use of resources, the intelligent organization of services, the social inclusion of its inhabitants, the generation of opportunities and the care of biodiversity.
