The president of Brazil, Luis Inácio Lula Da Silva, acknowledged that both Cuba and Venezuela have million-dollar debts with his country and blamed his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, for the delay that both countries have had in paying their commitments. According to official data from September 2022, the Venezuelan debt overdue for financing from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (Bndes), destined for goods and services projects, reached 682 million dollars.
The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said on Monday, February 6, that he trusts that the government of Nicolás Maduro will settle the debts it has with the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (Bndes). The president blamed his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, for the delay that has been presented by Venezuela, but also by Cuba.
The statement was made during the act for the inauguration of the new head of the financial institution. During his speech, he indicated that the entity was “the victim of many lies” and “very serious defamations” during the elections in which he emerged victorious against Bolsonaro.

He assured that the Bndes “never gave money to countries friendly to the Government” and did “finance engineering services from Brazilian companies for projects in 15 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean between 1998 and 2017.” At the same time, he defended that the bank is recovering everything it financed, although he acknowledged that “there are some contracts in arrears, although they are all covered with guarantees.”
According to the latest official data from September of last year, overdue debts in Bndes financing for goods and services projects in Venezuela reached 682 million dollars, while in Cuba they reached 227 million.
