The Brazilian president assured that he will work with Europe to “strengthen” the economies of both and “promote common causes to build a better world.”

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen spoke this Thursday with the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Both expressed interest in “get the Mercosur agreement” with the European Union (EU) “to cross the finish line”.
“Good call with President Lula. We are both interested in strengthening the link between the European Union and Brazil, particularly by getting the Mercosur agreement across the finish line and increasing our joint efforts to fight deforestation,” the European chief tweeted Thursday.

For his part, the Brazilian president replied that they will strengthen the alliance between the two countries to “strengthen our economies and promote common causes to build a better world.”
Faced with Von der Leyen’s expression of desire to visit Brazil “soon”, Lula welcomed her with open arms: “She will be very well received.”

After three and a half years from the signing of the agreementat the end of January of this year it was learned that the European bloc seeks to achieve it in July 2023. “Hopefully we can do it before the next summit with Latin America that will take place on July 17 and 18 in Brussels,” he told AFP. Vice-President of the Commission, Frans Timmermans.
