Lula da Silva leaves the hospital after cranial surgery

Lula da Silva underwent successful surgery on Tuesday in Sao Paulo for a hematoma near the brain resulting from a blow suffered almost two months ago.

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was discharged and left the Sao Paulo hospital this Sunday, December 15, where he had been convalescing since he underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday for an intracranial hemorrhage.

“I am here whole (…) returning home calmly,” said the 79-year-old president at a press conference with his medical team at the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital.

Two days later he underwent a new complementary intervention, provided for in the protocol according to the doctors, to minimize the risk of new bleeding.

The president will be able to resume his activities, although the next 15 days will be “more careful,” said cardiologist Roberto Kalil, one of the doctors who treated him in the hospital, at the press conference.

Lula must remain at home in Sao Paulo until Thursday, December 19, when he will undergo a control tomography. Then you will be able to return to Brasilia and continue your agenda of commitments.

“The only restriction is physical exercise,” Kalil said.

Another of his doctors, Ana Helena Germoglio, stated that Lula’s recovery “extremely exceeded what was expected.”

“I confess that I was scared”

The Brazilian leader, known for his frenetic work pace, burst into the press conference without warning and approached the microphones, walking unassisted alongside his wife Rosangela ‘Janja’ da Silva.

He thanked God for taking care of him “so generously” after the new incident, which adds to a history of health problems, such as laryngeal cancer in 2011 and hip surgery last year.

He was wearing a jacket and a hat that covered the aftereffects of the surgical intervention.

Although he complained of headaches from the surgery, he said he had “the energy of a thirty-something and the strength of a twenty-something,” a slogan repeated in his campaign.

Even so, he noted that he will not travel to the beach to spend the end of year holidays, a habit of many Brazilians.

“I never think I’m going to die, but I’m afraid, so I need to take care of my discipline,” he said.
